Nationwide Arena & Misc. CBJ Facts

The arena name was announced on Sept. 8, 1997.

Columbus has Nationwide Insurance and the Columbus Dispatch to thank for the team. Nationwide Insurance paid for 90% of the construction cost to build the $125 million 18,000 seat Nationwide Arena, and the Columbus Dispatch  put up the other 10% of the cost. The only money that the city of Columbus had to contribute was for improvements to the roads around the site. The city said that these improvements would have to be done even if the arena hadn't been built. The Nationwide Arena was built on the parking lots around Nationwide Plaza. Click here to see a picture of what the proposed arena site was to look like.

Note: Central Ohio is home to 1.95 million people. Columbus is the 34th largest TV market in the United States.

Misc. CBJ facts

Blue Jacket was a Shawnee leader in the early 19th century

The Nationwide Arena was revealed to the public on Thursday April 9, 1998. The arena will be open for play in September 2000.

The new arena will look a lot like the surrounding buildings. The building will be brick and will have many windows, with some even around the top of the arena.

The arena will also have an attached practice rink, unlike any other arena in the NHL. The practice rink will have big windows and seats so people can sit and watch. It also will be open for public skating when it's not being used by the team.

The one unusual feature will be a light tower, and the light will be seen for miles. The closest example I can think of would be the light on top of the Luxor in Las Vegas.
