My Real Life "Herbie" Story

One day when I was 15, my dad and I had a real life “Herbie” experience. I had just rotated the tires on my 1973 Beetle and my dad and I went on a 15-mile round trip to a store. On the way home we took a different road than we usually used. So, my dad, who was driving, decided to hop on the freeway to go from that exit to ours.

We would be slowing down to get off the freeway and from nowhere a tire went by. The first question we had was, where did that tire come from? Well it was our front driver’s side tire and luckily we would pull over to the side with no trouble. We would get out and look at the car and the tire was just gone.

We would get the spare out and we took a lug nut from each of the other 3 tires and drove to a local place that repairs classic Beetles to get four lugs.

Well that’s not the end of the story. We would go out on the freeway to get the tire back and we would find it in the center median. Luckily no cars hit it and no accidents were caused, but we would find the tire with the hubcap still on it and all 4 lugs in it.
